At Abrahams

ASMO circuit bent gear, originally uploaded by asmo23.
I was recently invited to perform At Abrahams which is a quarterly event curated by Abrahams, a brand design consultancy based in London. Each event has a different theme and is held at a different venue with guest speakers and an invited audience of people from creative industries.
The event was held at Nokia’s international design studio in Soho, London.
“Back to the future”
Should we look back in order to move forward? Is true creativity achieved by standing on the shoulders of giants or by reacting against what came before?
Guest speakers
Gerard Coleman, chocolatier and co-founder, L’Artisan du Chocolat
David Bickle, architect and director, Hawkins\Brown
Miriam Rayman, editor and trends analyst, The Future Laboratory
Performance by Stu Smith, ASMO
Chaired by Dr Mark Miodownik
Thanks to Rumina Haji and Mike Abrahams for inviting me to perform.
There will be a follow up broadcast on Resonance FM on 17th September at 8pm, with an informal discussion based on the “Back to the Future” event at Nokia.

Circuit Bending Survey Results

It’s been a long time coming but the results are finally in. Back in April I created an online circuit bending survey to gather some information about the circuit bending community.  The original survey had a few specific questions asking people to list things they had bent but I removed these after a couple of days as it seemed impractical to list large amounts of bends.

Big thanks to the 300 of you who took the time to complete the survey, I think the results make quite interesting reading, some of it is pretty predictable but there are a few surprises in there. The overwelming majority come from the US and there were only 6 female benders, come on girls get your soldering irons out!
I realise that the “country” results may be a little skewed as the survey was conducted in English but there were quite a few from all corners of the globe. One person stated their country as the “Confederate States of America”, I had to count that as the US (sorry) :)

I have only listed the top 30 occupations although there were over 100 entered, including a Brahman, a Hot Dog Vendor, a Pilot, an Adventurer, an Activist, a Surgical Repair Technician and a Comic Book Specialty Retailer (Jeff Albertsson perhaps). 2 people listed their occupation as SHIT.

I’d also like to say a very big thanks to GetLoFi’s excellent blog who kindly posted a link to the survey which generated a considerable amount of traffic. Sorry it took so long to get the results together but I’ve had an incredibly busy summer.

I have compiled the results into a PDF document which you can download below and browse at your leisure, hope you find it interesting.
